This workshop invites participants to find out more about the project ‘The Garden,’ and to learn from the ways in which it was able to be so radically accessible.
1) Welcome/Agenda: We will welcome people into the space, do quick introductions and go through the agenda for the session.
2) Introduction of Facilitators and Topic: The presenters will introduce themselves and the project ‘The Garden,’ which they have been working on for the last year. Radical and expansive access was something that developed partly unintentionally, by creating an abstract multi-sensory show which played outdoors in public spaces. We will identify specific performance and producing techniques that made this outdoor work so radically accessible.
3) Devising for access: Participants will devise a 2 min ‘moment’ in small groups, with a specific access area in mind. We will use our bodies, our voices and simple materials found in nature. Three groups will all be assigned one of the following access focuses:
Intergenerational - serving many ages at once;
Multi-sensory - engaging all the senses;
Choose your own adventure - many different ways to experience the same performance.
4) Producing for access: The presenters will share some of the producing and community engagement strategies we used to strive for access and inclusion. Participants will then reflect on a project, show or class of their own, and which steps or strategies they could implement to make it more accessible in terms of language, space, age and content.
5) Closing: We reflect in small groups and close out with an embodied activity.
