Kabuki was the most popular entertainment for the average person in Japan during the Edo period. The Japanese characters for “Kabuki” (歌舞伎) literally represent “song” (歌), “dance” (舞), and “skill” (伎). During its 400-year history, Kabuki has developed a comprehensive treasure trove of various theatrical devices that make up its form. In this workshop for beginners, we will be acting as guides of Kabuki. We will offer introductory demonstrations and opportunities to try performing Kabuki Theatre. The workshop is suited for a wide range of audiences, including children who are curious to try new things, adults who may assume that Kabuki is incomprehensible and difficult to access, and foreigners who are interested in Japan's culture. We will explore the origins of Kabuki and the types of Kabuki, including Onnagata (male actors who specliase in playing female roles) and Tachimawari (stage fighting in Kabuki).
