Experience international theatrical traditions from Hawaiʻi, USA in this exploration of three recent productions from the TYA Program at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, Department of Theatre & Dance. • Fights & Delights (Traditional Chinese Xiqu for young audiences) • The Last King of Bali (Balinese Wayang Listrik, educational outreach) • Keiki Kalo (Hawaiian-language and land-based ethos (ʻāina) in TVY) Hawaiʻi’s rich cultural mixture of people and traditions have given rise to a pattern of presenting TYA pieces from diverse international origins. Though this “global to local” inquiry requires a rigorous and extensive training in traditional theatrical forms, the offerings allow Hawai’i’s keiki (children) to ‘experience the world’ from their seats in the Theatre auditorium, allowing for unique celebrations of global education and understanding.
