This presentation chronicles the evolution and structure of "Act Out Justice," a project between the University of Central Florida and Orlando Repertory Theatre (United States) that trains youth in Theatre for social change strategies. In AOJ, high school students (aged 14-18) use research, personal narratives, and Theatre-making strategies to devise an original Theatre piece responding to four lenses of social justice: race, class, gender, and ability. AOJ trains youth as Theatre makers, facilitators, and activists through the creation of an interactive performance for members of their community. This presentation and interactive workshop contextualises AOJ and its evolution within the precarious sociopolitical climate of the United States from 2016-present, considering issues of student safety, censorship, and bias as we worked to adapt the programme to work within our swiftly changing society.
