Finding Creative Paths Through ‘Dipalo’- A Participatory Workshop on Writing a Play Worlds Apart
The creative process of the play, including the cultural elements and the challenges of international collaboration, will be the basis of discussion for participants who will be encouraged to contribute any experiences and opinions. Different aspects of provocation will be highlighted e.g., language use, cultural norms, etiquette, colloquialism, social media, the role of religion, and the relevance of traditional and state authorities. Through Applied Theatre techniques, the actual methods of writing and developing the play will be considered e.g., international dramaturgy, mentoring, workshopping, and audience feedback.

Sobre los artistas

This online participatory workshop is facilitated by Write Local Play Global playwrights Lalu Mokuku (South Africa) and Ginni Manning (United Kingdom), co-writers of the award-winning play 'Dipalo'. Both met whilst attending the 2017 Cradle of Creativity ASSITEJ World Congress and Performing Arts Festival in Cape Town, South Africa. They embarked on a 3-year long international collaboration resulting in their play winning the ASSITEJ African Playwriting Competition 2019. Through the WLPG and ASSITEJ SA partnership, the playwrights received international mentorship. The play has since been published, presented in staged readings and (due to COVID-19 preventing a live performance) was broadcast as a radio play in November 2020.
