Los Ibeyis y el Diablo
Teatro Papalote

‘Iibeyis y el diablo’ is a classic of Cuban puppetry and dramaturgy, which has been performed in Cuba, Mexico, Spain, Colombia, Brazil. Whilst exploring themes of cultural identity, it invokes symbols of our Afro-Cuban mythology. Two children must fight against the Congo, Lucumi and Castilian devil, until they defeat him and return tranquillity to the divine mountain.

‘Los Ibeyis y el Diablo’ is not only the rescue of an oddum, or legend of black origin. It also combines the grace of the Creole Choteo, the picaresque breath of Spanish heritage, the artifices of the African griot and the essence of Cuban vernacular theatre: the bufo. In this way, the work is like a succulent ajiaco, that national dish that mixes many flavours! ‘Los Ibeyis y el Diablo’ is a satirical, parodic and popular buffo, not just because it is a return to the genre, but because of the contemporary and synthetic interpretation in the language of puppetry.
