Advocating Equal Access to Performing Arts in Schools
ASSITEJ Sweden / ASSITEJ South Africa

In Sweden, depending on where you live or in which school you study some children see performing art every year. But there are also children that very seldom or even never see performing art. We have met high school students who've never experienced a theatre or dance performance ever. ASSITEJ Sweden has been working for the last four years on how to engage the government to better support arts access for all children.

In South Africa, ASSITEJ SA has been able to get the Department of Basic Education to buy into a concept called “arts-rich schools”. While this is still in the early stages, it provides a potential mechanism for direct engagement with schools as a centre for artistic education, access, community outreach and intergenerational dialogue. It may be a model for international collaboration.

The purpose of this seminar is to share and discuss perspectives on distribution – how can we organize to secure children’s rights to performing arts?

We want to:

● Get some insight into how the systems in our different countries work;

● Get inspired by what is good/efficient within the systems in different countries;

● Find tools, spirit and inspiration on how to work and organize to improve.
