Around Laurent Mülheisen and Matthieu Loos, the (round) table brings together European playwrights and translators.
First, participants describe the challenges of young audience theater translation in their respective European regions. What is the concrete reality of being a playwright or translator for young audiences in Sweden, Serbia, the Netherlands, France, or Germany?
The theme then resonates transnationally: how and why should we identify and disseminate scripts written in foreign languages? Is "translation" always necessary? What does it mean to "translate"?
The roundtable is part of the Youngslation project, initiated by le Ciel – European stage for childhood and youth (Lyon). This project gathers partners (theater and literature organizations) in Belgium, Sweden, Serbia, Slovenia, Tunisia, and France to explore writing, translation, and reading of Euro-Mediterranean theater for young audiences.
The project will take place over the next two seasons:
- 25/26: Reading and identification of theater scripts for young audiences in the six countries;
- 26/27: Translation of the six plays into the six project languages, followed by dissemination (staged readings) in rural areas.

About the Artists
Matthieu Loos is an Alsatian scientist turned into a playwright and poet.
During his studies at the National Physics School in Strasbourg, he is fascinated by fundamental physics, gets an engineer degree, and considers pursuing research... but he discovers theater, which he gets passionate about! Between 2002 and 2006, his professional life starts simultaneously by being an engineer and an actor. Inherited from both Eugène Ionesco and Werner Heisenberg, he develops a strong taste for uncertainty and its poetic rigor. In 2010, he decides to "be nothing but an artist," founds his company Combats Absurdes, and starts to write for theater. Since 2014, he is leading major European projects with his troupe, and since January 2023, he is co-directing a theater for kids and young audiences in Lyon: le Ciel, founded with Amélia Boyet.
Laurent Muhleisen, born in 1964 in Strasbourg, is a French theater translator, specializing in contemporary German theater. Since 1992, he has translated over fifty plays. Since 1999, he is directing the Maison Antoine Vitez, International Center for Theater Translation in Paris. He is one of the key figures in the TER network (Translate, Edit, Represent), which aims at promoting dissemintaion of contemporary dramatic works across Europe. Since 2006, he is the literary and theatrical advisor at the Comédie-Française. One of his tasks is to consider how works from the global repertoire of today can be incorporated. Finally, he is a member of the jury for Theater Transfer program, run by the Goethe Institute, the French Institute in Berlin, and the Robert-Bosch Foundation.
