'Small Talk' is an opportunity for ASSITEJ members from all around the world to become familiar with the new ASSITEJ Small Countries Network, a Network for ASSITEJ National Centres and Associates from countries with a population under 1,000,000. The session will explore the realities faced by TYA practitioners in the small countries which the Network represents - this currently includes ASSITEJ Cyprus, ASSITEJ Luxembourg, ASSITEJ Liechtenstein, ASSITEJ Iceland, Bradipoteatar (San Marino), and the ZiguZajg Festival (Malta). The presentation will touch on both the challenges and opportunities posed by operating in countries with low population numbers, with limited facilities, and with a small Performing Arts sector. After a presentation by the Network and its members, the audience will be invited to join a discussion about how we can best serve children and young people in the smallest countries.

About the Artists

ASSITEJ Cyprus was founded in March 2021 and today numbers 210 members: theatres, theatre groups and individuals. During the two years of its life, ASSITEJ Cyprus has given much emphasis to the promotion of the protection of children's rights. One of the first actions of the organisation was to translate the ASSITEJ Manifesto into Greek and Turkish. Some of the Centre's activities include a campaign to give free tickets to children from vulnerable backgrounds, workshops and discussions on children's rights, a big event to celebrate the World Day of Theatre for Children and Young Audiences, as well as advocacy for children's rights. Furthermore, ASSITEJ Cyprus was part of a partnership with organisations from six other countries, which successfully took part in the EU project 'Perform Europe'. Through the project, a Lithuanian show for visually impaired children was hosted in Cyprus. One of the next projects of the Centre is the collaboration with a Swedish creative team to adapt into Greek the well-known Swedish performance The Articles, which is based on the UN Convention for the Protection of Children's Rights. The project is carried out in collaboration with the Cyprus Commissioner for the Protection of Children's Rights and the Cyprus Ministry of Culture and will travel to schools all over Cyprus during the next school year.

ASSITEJ Iceland has been operating since 1990 and has aimed to protect theatre for children and young people by, among other things, promoting communication between artists who work in this field in Iceland and encouraging them to international cooperation. The Icelandic branch of the association has organised international workshops, participated in Nordic cooperation, sent representatives to courses and workshops and has mediated the selection of Icelandic performances at foreign theatre festivals. The core of the activities in Iceland since 2013 has been UNGI, an annual international performing arts festival for young audiences in Reykjavík. The festival is independent but held in parallel and in good cooperation with the Children's Culture Festival in Reykjavík. The festival has marked its place in the cultural life of the city. It has been decided to make the UNGA International Performing Arts Festival a biennial and to use the intervening year to build up the organisation's internal work and support the professional scene in Iceland. ASSITEJ Liechtenstein, founded in 2005 has 50 members and 7 board members, is a national and international network for the promotion and further development of art and culture for children and young people. In addition to subject-specific exchange, further training opportunities and our own diverse projects, we network our members from different art disciplines and are committed to children's right to art and culture. ASSITEJ Luxembourg became a National Centre of ASSITEJ International in 2020. Its 80 members are theatres, companies and individual professionals as well as amateur theatre groups that work with and for children and youth. The aim is to promote the performing arts for young audiences in Luxembourg and to give a voice to those who are often overlooked by political decision-makers. ASSITEJ Luxembourg organises workshops, conferences and the bi-annual children and youth theatre award. Bradipoteatar - San Marino was founded as a theatre company in 1997 and works in the Republic of San Marino, presenting performances every year to kindergardens, elementary, middle and high schools. In 2007 we opened our Theatre and Dance School, dedicated to children and young people from 3 to 26 years old. Our mission is to give the opportunity to children and youth to grow free and to be curious, especially regarding theatre and dance. ZiguZajg Festival - Malta, International Arts Festival for Children & Young People is the only festival in Malta specifically aimed at children & young people, presenting an enticing programme of international productions and newly commissioned work, annually. Since its inception in 2010, the festival programme of ZiguZajg has grown and strengthened, becoming a cornerstone of the cultural calendar both in Malta and overseas. The festival aims to keep developing a national repertoire of creative work for children and young people, whereby over the past 11 years we have commissioned over 80 new projects in a variety of genres and creative forms and collaborated with local and foreign stakeholders to present work of high artistic excellence for young audiences! Just last year, as a reaction to the COVID-19 pandemic, the festival presented its first-ever digital programme of events which saw thousands of children across Malta, Gozo and overseas tune into our first-ever online festival.
