Girl with the Magic Paintbrush
A show presented by YouTube hosts Kitty Kat and Cup Cake, looking closely at the backstory of a young child living alone with her visually impaired grandmother.
Before she receives a magic paintbrush in a dream that changes their lives forever, we learn more about her daily life: how she cannot go to school with other children because she helps her grandmother to run a small spaza shop, as well as with work around the house, and in their vegetable garden.
"Simphiwe is closing up her stall for the day. She takes the empty sweet trays and her homemade brushes to the river to practice suminagashi and make a print for her grandmother, using things she has collected around the house and in the forest".
We explore different emotions linked to growing up, themes of exclusion and inclusion, and the reality of loneliness and deprivation that is faced by many children around the world - all through the prism of the ancient art form of suminagashi (marbling).
A short panel discussion after the presentation will discuss how suminagashi has been incorporated into the storyline of the interactive Dance musical "Girl with the Magic Paintbrush" and how it allows for audience participation.
